Connect a domain you already own

If you already own a web address, you can point it at your new site. It stays registered to you at your own provider (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Squarespace and so on) — you keep paying them as you do now, and there's no extra charge from us. Your site stays up on its free roofpropage.com address the whole time, so nothing goes dark.

Connect it#

1. Open your dashboard, tap "Edit" on your site, then the "Settings" tab. Scroll to the "Custom domain" card.
2. In "Your domain", type your address — joesroofing.com, or a sub-address like roof.joesroofing.com — and tap "Connect". You can type it with or without www; we treat them as the same domain.
3. The card now shows "Waiting for DNS" and a small table of what to add. Sign in where you bought the domain, open its DNS settings (the page that says where your address points), and add the rows exactly as shown. A whole domain needs two rows: an "A" row named "@" and a "CNAME" row named "www". A sub-address needs one "CNAME" row.
4. That's it. While this page is open we re-check every 30 seconds. If you close it, we still check once a day, so it can take until the next morning to flip on its own — come back and tap "Check status" any time to check right now.

How long it takes#

DNS changes can take a few minutes to a few hours to spread across the internet. When our check sees the new record, the card flips to "Connected" and reads "Your site is live at" your address. If you've closed the page, our daily check does the flip for you and emails you "Your domain is live". If you don't see the flip, the most common cause is a typo in the row, or a leftover old "A" or "CNAME" row on the same name that should be deleted.

What happens next#

Your site is served on your own address. Anyone who visits the old roofpropage.com address — including search results that still list it — is sent straight to your domain, permanently. Visitors who type www.yourname.com are forwarded to the plain name, so both work. Your site's own footer links to our terms and privacy pages still point to roofpropage.com; that's expected.
